When the family lived in Irving Road, Southbourne, Bournemouth, I started giving Wendy cycling lessons in an adjacent road where there was a large hedge. Wendy would start off well, then unerringly swerve and crash heavily into the hedge. This continued repetitively until it was felt that the hedge, and Wendy, had suffered enough. Some years later Wendy and her friend Anne Russell undertook an extraordinary adventure pedalling to what was then Yugoslavia and back! Wendy on a borrowed ‘sit up and beg’ type cycle. Over two thousand miles. Amazing.
